If you are looking to add colour, texture as well as some natural sweetness to your meal, the fresh frozen corn is what you need. Most vegetables are frozen right after being harvested, as this is when their nutritional value is at its highest.
Cooking sweet corn isn’t as complicated as you think it is. In fact, it is very simple. Here are a few ways that you can pull this healthy snack off:
Take a pot and fill in with filtered water until it is half full. Dissolve some salt in the water. Make sure the pot is on high heat until boiling, and then reduce the heat until the water simmers. Place the corn in the pot for 3 minutes while the water is simmering. To ensure the corn cooks evenly and does not stick together, stir it with a wooden spoon. Remove a kernel of corn from the water after 3 minutes to check the tenderness. Once done, strain the corn on a sieve. Season as you desire and serve.
Boil about 1 inch of water in the bottom of the steamer. This is to reduce the risk of damaging or burning your pot. Put the frozen sweet corn on a sieve. Season the corn with anything you prefer, such as herbs, spices, or just plain old salt and pepper. Steam the corn for 4 to 5 minutes. Leave it longer if the corn is not as tender as you want it to be after the initial cooking time. Make sure the water in the bottom of the steamer is at least 1 inch at all times. Once it is cooked, pour out the contents on plate and continue seasoning.
Place a pan on the stove and adjust it to medium high heat to warm pan before adding your choice of cooking fat; such as olive oil or butter. Once the oil is hot enough, place the frozen sweet corn and stir continuously with a wooden spoon to ensure even cooking. The corn takes about 5 minutes to become tender but if you would like to caramelize the corn, continue cooking the corn on the pan for 10 minutes. Once done, drain the corn on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Season the corn and it is ready to be served.
Place the frozen sweet corn in a microwavable bowl. Season the corn. Do not microwave the corn all at once because microwaves vary in consistency and strength. Instead, open the microwave to check on your corn every 30 seconds and stir the corn in between. This is to ensure even cooking. The average time you should leave your corn inside the microwave is 3 minutes on a high setting. Once cooked, remove from the microwave, season it further and enjoy!
Place the frozen sweet corn in an aluminum tray (or any ovenproof container) and season with anything you’d like – herbs, spices, salt and pepper, anything! Once the oven is heated, place the aluminum tray in the oven. Leave the corn in the oven for 5 minutes if you like it tender. However, if you want the corn to be brown in colour, then you can leave it in for 15 minutes. Once the corn is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it cool. It is now ready to serve.
